I think it means was.

Yes, it's a particle but it doesn't mean with, and...*confused*- could it be "used after onomatopoeic adverb"? but is pan one?

I guess パン is onomatopoeic, which would make a lot of sense in that sentence if it was. Doesn't seem to be in any dictionary I've checked so far though.- I found パン listed as an onomatopoeic word in various lists and dictionaries, like on gooJisho:

I have "All about particles" book but not knowing what exactly was pan wasn't helping, although onomatopoeia was the only thing that made sense. Really Mog86uk, I don't know how you find all those sites :P *saving them* 
That whole sentence seems off. The first kanji used 調子づく means to become warm up or become enthusiastic. The second kanji 水桶 means pail ( for water), or bucket. パン in this usage means bread. There is no onomatopoeia for パンin my onomatopoeia dictionary. Finally 叩いた means to strike, to clap. From what whomever was trying to say by making this sentence it hints to cooking instructions and they used the wrong kanji to make the sentence. Xamuel.com isn't really and accurate source for onomatopoeia; if you read the first couple of paragraphs it states it taken from an English translated manga from the 90's. Try the book "Jazz Up Your Japanese with Onomatopoeia" by Hiroko Fukada for an accurate usage and meanings on Japanese onomatopoeia.- It's from a book, In a the translated version it was saying that she was taping the pail to gain courage.
