- look up Tea Kim's guide to learning Japanese and see if there is anything there hope that helpsDecember 20, 2014 at 12:47pm
- lol, you can try http://www.imabi.net/ but it's definitely gonna be more confusing than tae kim's. I recommend getting a physical book and sticking with it like genki or minna no nihongo. I think you can view the genki textbook on scribd but that's really your best bet.December 20, 2014 at 2:12pm
- Haha, I love it! Every time anyone asks for somewhere to learn grammar, Tae Kim's guide always gets mentioned whether you like it or not, almost as if there aren't hundreds of alternative places to learn it.
I don't really like Tae Kim's guide that much, but I do still think it's probably the best suggestion to give if you don't know much about the person who's asking. The sites I personally like are usually the type with more complex detailed explanations with lots of heavy grammatical terminology. I don't really know what would suit you best, so here's a just a copy-paste unhelpfully long list of some of the good sites I've used for Japanese grammar... ^^

- Classical Japanese (...just because I really like this page and have spent a lot of time on it, not because it's going to be helpful):

- Really ancient PDF's of completely free Japanese grammar books (ancient as in dating back as far as the 1850's!!!):

http://www.imabi.net/classical.htm
but yeah the list is massive as can be, you can also check out this website - http://nihongo-e-na.com/eng/
This lists out a bunch of great websites by category and was made by The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute so its bound to have some great sites listedDecember 20, 2014 at 3:31pm - @freakymrq
Yeah, I've definitely seen Imabi's classical Japanese section before, although I haven't read much of it yet. Imabi is probably my favourite Japanese grammar website, with all the insane amounts of technical details given for everyhing, but I'm not sure whether it is the type of site Kenji is asking for?
That classical Japanese link I gave is really interesting though. I re-read it many times until I understood almost everything. All the Japanese grammatical terms like 連用形 and 未然形 are fully burned into my head from reading it so much that I can now recognise them instantly. Learning the background history of Japanese grammar was really helpful to me, as I like to understand the logical side of everything. I now understand modern Japanese grammar a LOT better thanks to that page. :)
My favourite sites in the list are probably Imabi, Nihongo Resources, Kim Allen, Tim Sensei's Corner, Stack Exchange, Wikipedia, and that Ranma site. However, those free PDFs of Japanese grammar textbooks dating from the 明治 period are really awesome and very interesting to read. I can't wait to completely finish Slime Foreset Adventure so that I can get back to learning some grammar again. Haha, I'm such a geek! :DDecember 21, 2014 at 11:27am - Just because I don't see it here I would also like to mention www.renshuu.org as a great site to study grammar. I have been using it for about 3 years as of now. I like it because you can write your own sentences under a grammar point and have other people comment if you used the grammar correctly or mention if there is a better way using a different grammar point to say what you want to say.March 14, 2016 at 11:11am
- Kenjisan,
It might help if you tell us what it is that makes Tae Kim's explanations hard for you to understand. Tae Kim does a very good job of explaining how Japanese sentences are different from English sentences without going into a lot of technical details. Many beginners find his explanations more helpful than most.
I think you may be looking for something that doesn't exist-- a way of understanding Japanese sentences without changing the way you think about how a sentence is put together. Japanese sentences simply do not work the same way English sentences do, and there are a couple of completely new ideas you have to learn before you can understand how Japanese sentences convey meanings, and how to convey meanings that way yourself. If Tae Kim isn't helpful to you, you probably need to work from a textbook or with the guidance of a teacher.March 14, 2016 at 11:23am
