Good guess Kenji. That guess was fairly logical, but only if it is a compound kanji word. If you look up 者 in a dictionary (as vocabulary, not kanji), there are two words written just 者:
者【もの】(kunyomi) = "person" [noun]
者【しゃ】(onyomi) = "someone who does ..." [suffix]
So the meaning is slightly different if it is a suffix like in 作者. Here's some other examples, most of which are questions on JCJP I think:
医者【いしゃ】doctor
歯医者【はいしゃ】dentist
科学者【かがくしゃ】scientist
化学者【かがくしゃ】chemist
記者【きしゃ】reporter
読者【どくしゃ】reader
役者【やくしゃ】actor/actress
消費者【しょうひしゃ】consumer
忍者【にんじゃ】ninja
But 者 is also the last kanji in compound words too where it is read as kunyomi もの...
若者【わかもの】lad, youth, young man
悪者【わるもの】rascal, scoundrel, ruffian, bad person
田舎者【いなかもの】hick, hillbilly, bumpkin, person who lives out in the sticks
