Beginner reading practice
For people who want some beginner reading practice but currently only know basic vocab, kanji and grammar, I think this is a decent short story to try:
http://language.tiu.ac.jp/materials/eng/yomi/yomi02.html
What's good about this story is not just that it is fairly basic level but also that the dialogue itself is useful. It is about a how a student who is learning how to speak properly in Japanese to his teacher (the formality difference compared to talking to close friends, and also the different meaning of some Japanese words like あなた compared to their English equivalents). This is just one of many similar reading materials offered on that site.

If like me you find the underlined links within the stories distracting, try installing the "Stylish" extension for Chrome or Firefox and then clicking "Find more styles for this site". I made a "Readability Enhancer" style for that site that you can download for Stylish, which makes the links in all the stories blend in much nicer with the rest of the text. ^^
